Anybody Else Feeling Some Political Fatigue?

I swear to God, every morning I look at my newsfeed and this is how I feel:

I'm as tired of political posts as everyone else, even though I'm glad to read the discourse because it means we are still allowed to have discourse. Being quiet when the freedoms that built this country are crumbling around you is not an option.

That being said, I need a break. So here's a piece of video from a few years back that always makes me happy. This is Lin-Manuel Miranda, songwriter and Broadway star (and probably soon to be Oscar winner) extraordinaire, on his wedding day. Enjoy!

This Just In: It's Time For Fun On A Friday!

It's Friday! Yay! Oh, am I ready for a weekend. Still battling this crud in my lungs and I long for a couple of days of sleeping in. Oh, wait. I'm a mom. Nevermind.

Anyway, let's laugh this week out with our friends in the media!

We'll start with this guy, who was born to be a firefighter:

What Song Is Ruined For You Forever - And Why?

Music is a wonderful balm for your soul. It can lift your mood, help you wallow in a cathartic cry (lookin' at you, Adele. . . ) energize you, or calm the savage breast.

I know, you probably thought the quote was "soothe the savage beast," but you're wrong.

Mostly Wordless Wednesday: Depleted

I'd love to tell you I look that good
But I've been hacking up a lung all day
And my desire to just about everything
Is pretty much nil
So I'm taking a break
And pampering me today
Catch you tomorrow
If the mucus gods are kind

I Can't Do It. I Just Can't.

Guys, I'm exhausted. I was sick all weekend, and last night I got not one minute of sleep. I am not exaggerating. Wide awake all night.

And it's been weird weekend for the country on on my Facebook feed, and I just can't write anything with any real depth today. I just don't have it in me.

So here, watch this video that made me laugh even though I shouldn't have laughed. Catch ya tomorrow, I hope.

Sorry Guys, I'm Not Feeling The Fun On THIS Particular Friday

Today, we're electing a man who:

  • Openly mocked a disabled person (and please, don't send me an article from Fox News claiming that's debunked. I have eyes. I could hear him. And he did it). As the mother of a son with a disability, this sickened and saddened me.
  • Chose a vice-presidential candidate who openly opposes equal rights and protections for LGBT people, and believes in funding "conversion therapy" for people who aren't heterosexual. As the mother of a daughter with a girlfriend, this terrifies me.

Mostly Wordless Wednesday: Sliding Into The Sick

I can feel it creeping over me
Sliding like a soggy, steamy, feverish blanket
Of sore muscles and aching limbs
The occasional cough sneaks in uninvited
Setting off a wave of heat
That turns my eyes grainy
And echoes through my aching throat
I long to crawl back into bed, on a heating pad
Sleep the day away
But I haven't won the lottery this week
So here I am
Trying to deny the sick that's already stomping on my soft palate
Dammit

What Dreams May Come - And Freak You Out

Last night, I dreamed that I was running down the street in heels and an ermine coat with a knapsack full of machine guns slung over my shoulder. Like, full-on gangster gun-moll, running from the law with Al Capone as my sugar-daddy.

What the hell?

I have always had vivid dreams - full of all sorts of crazy and fantastical crap. They're a lot of fun, until you hit one that scares you. Or tells you more about yourself than you're willing to face.

Do The Right Thing Today - Then Make It A Habit

Today, find a way to help someone in your community.

Then, just for the hell of it, let's all do it tomorrow. And the next day. And the next.

That's how great nations are built.

Another Fun Friday Edition of "What Did I Just Watch?"

It's Friday, and I am ready to be off the grid. Seriously. It's been a week. But before all the chill of the weekend, I'll point you toward a few pictures and videos that'll have you scratching your head or looking under your bed.

Someone please tell me what's going on here.

Mostly Wordless Wednesday: Dreams Come True

The books are in
I guess this is reality
Surreal as it seems
It's not every day your dream comes true
So excuse me as I savor a bit
Or a lot
Indulge me, please
This was a long time coming
And I'm still finding it hard to believe

Onions Are Great On Cheesesteaks, But Feet? Not So Much.

One of my Facebook friends posted this video over the weekend. I'm not a huge fan of "miracle cures" but I had to admit this one got my attention. Let's watch, shall we?

An onion. In my sock. At bedtime.

Right.

Today, I'd like to shine a spotlight on Service Dogs by Warren Retrievers (SDWR), out of Madison, VA. Warren Retrievers provides service dogs for a variety of causes, and one of them is autism support. Autism support dogs have very specialized training, including:

  • Supporting/redirecting a child experiencing sensory issues
  • Redirecting/distracting a child who is self-harming
Here's a short video about their dogs and the services they provide:

All Signs Point To Fun On A Friday!

It's Friday again - and after being back at work off the long break, this week felt like it was moving in dog years. Now the weekend is in view, and it's time to kick back and have a laugh on me.

We'll start with this adorable church sign:

Burger King for the win on this one:

Driving The Cold Away Keeps Kids Warm In The Greater Philadelphia Area

Today I'd like to give a local shout-out to a Philadelphia-area program that deserves a signal boost.

Since 2008, the Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation's Driving Away the Cold program has given the gift of warmth and confidence to more than 220,000 disadvantaged children. The program provides new coats to underprivileged children who would otherwise not have them.

They partner up with Operation Warm and the coats are distributed through more than 100 different social services agencies, shelters, school districts, regional YMCAs, and more. These non-profit partners identify the children who will benefit most from this gift and distribute the coats in a responsible manner.

Donations are accepted at numerous car dealerships throughout the Philly area (and suburbs), and you can also create your own fundraising page if you'd like to add to their effort.

Here's a list of dealerships collecting coats in the greater Philadelphia area

It's getting cold out there, folks. Let's show the warmth of human kindness to some kids who really need it. Stop by a dealership and make your donation today!

Mostly Wordless Wednesday: Just A Stone

I realize it's not much to look at
A simple gray stone
Plucked from the shore's edge
No sparkles or glitter or oddness in its shape
Small enough
Smooth enough
But a Viking may have stepped on it
Or a young Celt may have thrown it into the sea on a day at the beach
Only to have the tide pull it back in
This stone has seen some history
Maybe even one of my ancestors
My little piece of a land that calls to me

If My Daughter Doesn't Stop Throwing Words Around Without Care, I'm Going To Kill Myself

That's a joke, of course.

I'm not going to kill myself. And neither is my kid, but she's gotten into a pattern of throwing that phrase out a good two dozen times a day and it makes me bonkers.

Anna isn't normally a drama queen, but in this, I have to say she goes too far.

"Aaaaugh! I'm gonna kill myself!" she shouts, when she's pouring a drink and it overflows. "Ugh! I'm gonna commit [suicide]! Seriously!" comes when Netflix is taking too long to buffer. Eyebrow pencil nearly out? Kill myself. We're having tacos for dinner? Kill me now. Kill me, kill me, kill me.

Dirty Jobs Aren't For Everyone - Just Like College Degrees

A friend of mine directed me to this article a few days ago, where Mike Rowe (of Dirty Jobs fame) discusses college degrees vs learning trade that's in demand.

Mike has been preaching this gospel for awhile now, and he's got some really good points. Not everyone is college material - and that's not a swipe at anyone's intelligence or economic level. College is a waste of time for some, it really is. And worse, it's a waste of money, particularly for many people sucked into the new "for profit" universities that have been cropping up all over the place.

Not every college degree will guarantee you a living wage - and as a person with a Theatre degree, I can guarantee that. My college degree landed me a job in retail when I graduated, right next to everyone who didn't have a degree, making the same wage. Only I had student loans to pay back.
