Anyway, the music turned to Harry Belafonte, a lesser-known song of his based on African tribal myth that makes me happy every single time I hear it. It got me thinking that I should make a playlist of songs that make me stupid happy like that one does. Here's my playlist beginning:
Turn the World Around (Harry Belafonte) - He did a splendid version of this with The Muppets:
Just Haven't Met You Yet (Michael Buble) - I know I joke about dying a lonely, old cat lady, and I know I haven't had the nerts to sign up for online dating or have any sort of date for years, but I haven't given up hope on love. It just seems like I have. Anyway, Michael Buble makes me feel better about that.
Africa (Toto) - Come on! No brainer! That buildup and that chorus - how can you not feel good singing Africa?
Beautiful Day (U2) - I love just about every U2 song, but this one makes me want to run into a big field or the middle of Times Square, fling my arms wide and turn circles like Julie Andrews in the Alps. Seriously.
Wake Me Up Before You GoGo (Wham!) - This song takes me back to every raucous cast party, every lazy weekend day between rehearsals, every spontaneous breaking into dance or song from my college theatre days. It makes me want to reach for the aqua net and a pair of battered, taped-up ballet shoes and leg warmers and just be ridiculous.
Two Princes (Spin Doctors) - This song is ebullient. Just bubbly and fun and I know every word (including the scat-singing riffs) and it works for me.
Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard (Paul Simon) - Just a lighthearted, fun song and a great video to boot:
Send Me On My Way (Rusted Root) - This one is 100% David. It's just got this great vibe of "on I go" and I just see him strolling his sassy walk and watching the world go by with a smile and a wave.
Waka Waka (Shakira) - I know this was written for the FIFA World Cup, but it's just such an energetic and joyful song. I want to dance madly every time I hear it.
So that's the beginning of my playlist. What about you? What are your happy songs?
