My Father Carried A Wound From The War That I Will Never Forget

My father is a Viet Nam vet, but unless you were part of our family, you probably don't know that. He doesn't talk about it. Ever. If you bring it up, he'll acknowledge it, but he's never in all my living memory talked about it openly and without invitation. He was wounded there, and for his wounds he received the Purple Heart, which he keeps in a dusty box on the back of his dresser. I saw it once, when I was young and snooping around as kids do. My Mom yelled at me to leave it alone as it was Daddy's medal and very important. I remember asking my Dad what was so important about it, and he wouldn't answer me.

What A Great Movie - And I Never Want To See It Again

I am a cat owner. I did, however grow up with a family dog. I don't really have a preference for one over the other - it's just a matter of logistics. I work full-time and I don't think it's fair to lock a dog in a house all day while I do so. Cat's don't really care much if you leave them alone all day. In fact, cats don't really care much about anything as long as you feed them.

Still, on one lazy Saturday afternoon while the kids were at their father's house, I came across the movie "Marley & Me" on TV. I knew the basic premise - Man meets dog, dog becomes part of the family - but had never seen it before. I decided to give it a view.

Single Working Moms Don't Get To Enjoy Summer Like Everyone Else

Summer is right around the corner. If you were at my  house last weekend, you would have sworn from the weather it was already here. The kids are a couple of weeks (they'll tell you in days) from summer vacation, and everything should be laid back and wonderful.

Unfortunately, when you're a single working Mom, summer isn't much about relaxing.

I Wish Upon My Daughter A Daughter Just Like Her

I walked into the house the other day after work to find my daughter simultaneously (a) microwaving a pile of dimes and (b) painting several empty plastic containers - with nail polish - on my kitchen countertop (and no newspaper beneath them, of course).

Can blood pressure be measured on the Richter Scale? Because I think mine might have registered as far away as Chile.

Pay For Christmas NOW With This One Little Trick

Every holiday season, I watch my friends frantically trying to figure out how they're going to pay for Christmas. They save up chunks of paychecks a few months before, they max out the credit cards, and if they're lucky enough to get a Christmas bonus at work, you can bet it won't be spent on themselves. And then in January, they wail about their enormous credit card bills or how they got a late fee from the electric company when they had to pay the bill a bit late because of, y'know...Christmas.

Once Upon A Time-Season 1, Episode 22 Recap: A Finale That Makes You Shout "Finally!"

As you know, I'm retro-reviewing this particular season, as I didn't catch it when it originally aired. Since then I've seen a lot of character development, and a lot of secret yearnings and motivations revealed. And the truth of the matter is, tonight's episode is the tale of two mothers: one who wins, and one who loses - and how that defines them and unravels them.

So with that in mind, we begin tonight's tale in a prison cell with Charming, who is beating against the bars of the cage and vowing to find his true love. He's dragged out by the guards, and a struggle ensues. Just as we think he's getting away, he encounters a guard with a bow, who shoots over his shoulder and kills another guard. He removes his helmet to reveal...

Our Hunksman!! Oooooh! God, do I miss Graham. I miss him hard. Hard. Soooo hard.

Where was I? Right, the recap...

Thank You, Disney Channel

Oh, Disney Channel, you make me crazy.

Not as crazy as when my  kids were younger, mind you, but I still have to deal with the fallout from time to time. You see, Disney has this wonderful habit of getting your kids hooked on a great new show, and then it promptly moves its lineup around and the show is now in a new timeslot. Lots of channels do this, but Disney rotates every couple of months instead of once or twice a year.

My Daughter Got A Kitten - And A Taste Of Motherhood

We had a new arrival over the weekend, and his name is Niko. He's a little over 8 weeks old, feline and furry with paws too big for his body, formerly living in a barn with his Mom and siblings, and now he's in his new forever home at our house - a belated birthday present for my beautiful daughter.

We loaded him into the cat carrier in the back of the car on Saturday, then drove off with Anna and David in the back seat, trying to crane their heads and bodies around to see him while I continually reminded them that this car was going nowhere if two kids didn't sit down, already.

He started howling the minute we put him in the carrier, of course.

Once Upon A Time - Season 1, Episode 21: Rotten To The Core

We begin tonight with an elaborate dream sequence, courtesy of Regina's tortured subconscious. The evil she set in motion has come back to roost, and she sees the townspeople, including Henry, assembled as a mob with torches and pitchforks, ready to do her harm.

"I just wanted to win," she sobs, "For once." And Emma strikes the death blow with an obscenely large sword after smushing a blackened apple into moldy ooze in her hand.

Yeuuugh.

Regina wakes up panting in her bed (which can't be the first time - she did keep a huntsman as a love slave, after all), afraid like she's never been afraid before.

From We To Me

I have discovered a horrible truth about myself: I'm just not ready to date.

Not that it's devastating me to realize that, you understand. This "dating" thing is uncharted territory for me. I met my soon-to-be-ex husband at the tender age of nineteen, and we were inseparable shortly after. I never did the bar scene, never really dated around much, and now here I am, adrift.
